Welcome to my Showcase! Here you will find work I have done through out my graduate courses through Michigan State University. The focus of my Master of Arts in Education (MAED) is literacy, so I wanted to focus on pieces of work I completed for many of my literacy courses. I also included a few pieces from other elective courses that reflect on forms of differentiation for literacy, forms of observation, and my interest in coaching. I began my showcase highlighting my pieces focusing around literacy and end with my pieces that focus on observation and the swimming program I designed. I divided my works into Application, Design, and Research. Application focuses on applying tools and key concepts, design focuses on creation with gained knowledge, and research focuses on works that required attained knowledge and inquiry.
Application
Elementary students progress through spelling stages and many phonics skills as their literacy skills develop. This project focused on using data on an early elementary student who was given a Elementary Spelling Inventory and an Oral Reading Fluency Assessment. Given his data, I provided beneficial feeback and appropriate instructional interventions. Click on "William's Data" to read my written analysis on William's Data. |

As students progress into upper elementary they are expected to have acquired many of the spelling stages and be working towards to final stages of spelling skills. Given her data, I provided feeback and appropriate instructional interventions for Sarah. Click on "Sarah's Data" to read my written analysis on Sarah's Data. |

Providing interventions for literacy is very critical for student development and growth. This project focused on using two students I could compare based upon an area of needed improvement. I chose two students in my second grade class to partake in this case study. Both students had similar areas of weakness in literacy. I used the Elementary Spelling Inventory to assess both students then build two literacy lesson plans for interventions, as well as many small group sessions. Being an English speaking learner and educator, it is sometimes difficult to imagine how learning in English may be for those who do not speak English as a first language. The focus of the Narrative Sketch was to write about our personal experiences with languages other than English and situations we had be a part of where English was not the predominantley spoken language. This piece was very eye-opening to how ESL (English as a Second-Language) students and adults must feel in predominantely English speaking settings. Click "Narrative Sketch" to read more! |

Design
I had the opportunity to create a Professional Development for staff to instruct ESL (English as a Second Language) students. The focus of the instruction for the session was idioms, but can be applied to many other areas of grammar and vocabulary practice. Click on "ESL Professional Development" to read my piece. If you would like more information on the materials I used please contact me at [email protected]. |

I have had a passion for coaching swimming ever since I completed my competitive swim career at the end of my undergraduate studies for Michigan State University. I had the opportunity to design and build a program, as well as provide a rationale for how the program affects the mechanical attributes and physiological attributes of an athlete. |

Research
Multicultural Education was one of the most interesting courses I have had the chance to take while completing my graduate studies. Representation of cultures in media and higher education has also interested me and is a focus of this piece. Amongst using materials provided in class, including a lecture by Stuart Hall, I focused on how language and communication, music, and the presence and absence affect representation. Concepts of Educational Inquiry highlighted many different forms of inquiry. One form I felt interested in and wanted to highlight is observational inquiry. This form of inquiry focused around the analyzing of the film "Whale Rider" as an observer to the Maori culture. I wanted to highlight this form of inquiry because I observed a culture where a young girl follows her dreams and strives to learn more about her culture.
